After having received a really good batch of submissions, both solicited and not, we were a little disappointed with a slot on Friday afternoon.
However, we feel the session was a great success. The poster session was one of the best I've been to for a long while. I think the notion of "feedbacks" brings out the best in peoples imagination, and really shows up the richness of the Earth System.
The cross-disciplinary nature of the session also went towards making it very successful. There was a large amount of discussion between "physical" and "biogeochemical" researchers who wouldn't normally meet.
Overall, the session had an excellent mix of topics, from cloud feedbacks to ice, from climate sensitivity to carbon cycle. Terrestrial and ocean, full-GCM modelling to EMICs and simple models. There really was something for everyone!
A further strength of the session was the depth of quality of the speakers: Martin Claussen (who had given a Union medal lecture earlier in the week), Chris Forest, Dave McGuire, Richard Sommerville, Ed Schneider to name but a few. I think this was one reason that the oral session kept a large audience right up to the end of Friday afternoon. (I did a head count towards the end of the session, and we still had well upwards of 60-70 people by 5pm - I would expect even more had the session been mid-week). I would expect next year to follow this tradition - the session's focus is able to attract the latest research from a lot of high-profile scientists.
The facilities for the session were good. The lecture room (lecture room 1) was a good size, and was appropriately filled with people. The computers/projectors worked (as did the overhead projector, which I hadn't expect to need!).
My only concern was a general one for the conference - a lack of water/coffee available between sessions. It always seemed to run out. Hopefully the catering will be up to speed next year.
