Transport of colloids and microorganisms in the unsaturated zone may significantly affect groundwater quality. While colloids may act as carrier for inorganic and organic contaminants, microorganisms (e.g. viruses, bacteria, and protozoa) themselves present a risk. Currently, field evidence for the transport of colloids and microorganisms is scarce and divergent. As a consequence, assessment and prediction of transport phenomena become vague.
The aim of the proposed session is, to bring together scientists who are investigating the transport of microorganisms and colloids under unsaturated conditions, either practically or theoretically, and to discuss the consequences of their findings on groundwater quality.
While one part of the session will be devoted to field and laboratory evidence on all scales (micromodel -- column study - field experiment) another part of the session will focus on the application of modelling techniques to predict particle transport processes in the unsaturated zone.
