The past decade has raised challenging questions about the interactions between
biotic and abiotic compartments of hydrothermal and other deep-sea reducing
environments, and the major role they play in:
- fluid and gas flow from geosphere to hydrosphere
- microbial turnover of C, N, S (chemoautotrophy and related microbial
metabolisms)
- biomineralisation processes
- functioning of chemosynthetic ecosystems
- subsurface biosphere
- prebiotic chemistry
The variability and complexity of these geobiological systems in space and time
require interactions in the fields of chemistry, geochemistry, biogeochemistry,
and microbial ecology. This session will highlight new insights to these
questions. One main limitation for advances in these fields is the availability
of seafloor observation, experimentation and monitoring. We encourage
contributions on a broad range of issues, including interdisciplinary works,
quantitative in situ measurements of chemical and biological fluxes, as well
characterisation of small scale gradients.
