The determination of the upper mantle's thermal, seismological, and compositional structure in space and time is one of the fundamental goals of geosciences. Over the past 10 years there have been significant efforts to integrate geophysical and petrological observations, results from mineral physics, and geochemical constraints into self-consistent models of the lithospheric mantle and sublithospheric upper mantle. However, reconciling all these observables has proven to be an arduous task and many aspects of the interaction between the mantle’s thermal and compositional structure and the geophysical signals they produce are poorly understood.
In this multidisciplinary session, we will debate our current views of seismological, thermal, chemical and dynamical models of the lithospheric and sublithospheric upper mantle. Particular emphasis will be put on: recent advances in the tomographic imaging of various mantle regions; the origin and structure of Archean domains; current techniques for mapping of thermo-chemical lateral anomalies; effects of new results concerning the thermo-elastic and transport properties of upper mantle materials; role of specific elements in geophysical modelling (e.g. Fe, Al, Na, Cr); and petrological evidence for the nature and composition of mantle domains. We welcome contributions from mineral physics, lithospheric modelling, seismology, and mantle geochemistry and petrology that incorporate new constraints and apply new techniques to improve our understanding of the Earth’s upper mantle structure, composition and evolution.
