Hydrology is the science of the water cycle and as such it deals with the processes governing the depletion and replenishments of the water resources. Therefore hydrology has relevant implications on important practical problems such as water resources management, flood protection, contaminant remediation, and many others.
In order to be effective in the solution of the above problems, hydrologists need to seek a close connection between researchers and end users. However, everyday experience shows that such connection is not easy to establish. In fact, the dialogue between scientists and practitioners is made difficult by a series of setbacks. Researchers and end users often work in different institutions and different countries, speak different languages, use different working approaches and different terminologies. Last but not least, the researchers' aspiration not always matches the expectation of end users. These latter often deal with everyday problems that are very complicated to deal with in practice, for reasons that are sometimes not related to their scientific complexity.
For the above reasons, there is a current need to improve the connection between basic research and applied engineering. Such goal should be sought by introducing a proper education of young scientists, by stimulating the diffusion of knowledge and by encouraging practitioners to gain a better connection with researchers. Moreover, we probably need to better acknowledge those hydrologists who effectively contribute to the solution of the practical problems related to water resources.
This session aims to bring together invited speakers who experienced fruitful connections between basic research and end users. Their contributions can be a significant input to young as well as experienced researchers, in order to improve the link between scientific and applied hydrology.
The session will be followed by an open discussion in room 29, 17:30-18:30, that will focus on the ways forward for young hydrologists to effectively link their activity with the real world issues related to water.
