Information - SSP19 Ocean Gateways (co-listed in CL)
Event Information
Changes in the status of ocean gateways may act as critical threshold in the evolution of global climate and marine biota. In particular, the closing of zonal gateways in low latitudes and the opening and deepening of meridional and zonal gateways in high latitudes may have initiated the meridional flow dominating the Atlantic today, processes that probably led to fundamental changes in global thermohaline circulation and the gradual global cooling over the past 50 million years. This session seeks contributions that aim to quantify the role of low- and high-latitude ocean gateways in changing the global THC, climate, sediment formation, and evolution of marine organisms in the course of the Neogene.
